"Election night pizza is for wussies"

Ah yes, here I sit on yet another night in the newsroom with sports in the backround working on this week's Community News. My schedule is bumped up a day early due to a trip to Newburgh for job No. 2 on Wednesday, but it's nothing out of the norm...

But, oh but no, the newsroom staff has already scurried out of the building at 8:45 p.m. (normally past their bedtime deadline on any other night, but alas, it is the almighty election night.

You see, for the other 364+ days of the year, the newsroom is lightly staffed, usually a lone staffer who puts up with the screeches, howls and sometimes bodily functions coming from the sports corner. So when they work en mass, past 9 p.m. it is time for celebration from the rest of the editorial bodies.

Pizza is delivered (not the usual stroll across the street or down the block), soda is also delivered (not our usual libation, but we'll drink anything that's free) and fingers are busy pounding on keys and grabbing the phone when it rings.

What is different is that the news department now has the same angst, chest pains and fear of a loss of bowel movements that happen every night in the sports department. I usually add to the anxiety from double scheduling myself or getting too excited about a regular season victory and trying to grab something to eat before filing.

While they type away, watching the clock, fearing an important miss, we simply giggle away in the corner. "Hey, we do this every night. What's the problem?"

We get a kick out of it, that is until the newsroom is desolate the next day because everyone has put in so many hours this week. Oh man, give me a break.

Well, after 12 years, I've actually gotten over it (can't you tell).

So as you look back on your night of watching election returns on television or on-line, think of the guys and gals working late every night to get your sports into the paper and on-line each day.

And since we're talking about voting, don't forget to vote for your choice of winner in The Battle of Route 50.

P.S. If you would like to send over pizza, just let us know, I like Inferno the most and they make a killer pepperoni pizza pie. (Thanks!)
