Field Hockey seedings: Good news and bad news...for field hockey fans

Well, the Section II field hockey actually remembered our newspaper and was kind enough to send us this year's seedings, something we're still struggling with from other sports committees, but Mary Ann Bump is a class act.

That was the kiss portion of my rant, now comes the kick...are you out of your mind scheduling not only the first round on a Friday night with the football semifinals slated across the region, but then put the finals on Oct. 6 when the Class AA football final is scheduled. Saturday gives way to the other four football title games.

I hate to sound harsh and Mary Ann Bump is one of my favorite chairs, but for a sport that is looking to get some coverage, have athletes highlighted you just made field hockey a mushroom, kept it cold and in the dark.

Sectional soccer seedings come out Tuesday afternoon, play starts this week. Your first rounds will be largely ignored because of semifinal football action. The field hockey semifinals have some hope, but the finals will be overshadowed by the AA final and then four potential previews of the next day's football games. Tack on that all four classes will be contested on the same night, but at two different locations (sorry C/CCs) it becomes the D or E contest on a sports editor's schedule.

While I am personally thrilled that the finals are at Shenendehowa on its newly installed FieldTurf surface, it has great seating, concessions and lighting, did they really need it? I appreciate not driving out to Johnstown this year for the finals and was always a fan of the Skidmore surface, but I understand that the usage fee for Shenendehowa for the crowd of mainly parents and a few friends made the decision easier.

I'm not saying the events won't get coverage, but I don't think the committee positioned itself correctly for the local media, not just my smiling face, but the four other daily newspapers and five other television stations to give it highlighted coverage.

My plea in the future is to just let us (the media), help you.
