G19 - Little Falls plays big, dumps Saratoga, 6-4

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- The baseball gods giveth and the baseball gods taketh away. Along with it went the Saratoga Phillies three-game winning streak Sunday night, falling to the Little Falls Miners, 6-4, at East Side Rec.

During the recent winning stint, Saratoga (8-11) relied on strong pitching performances, a stingy defense and timely hitting. On Sunday, some of the poorer old habits re-surfaced for the local collegiate squad.

“When Little Falls wins games, other teams make mistakes,” Saratoga Phillies manager Kevin Graber said. “We got away from a few of the things that we have been doing in recent games. We took a few too many fastballs with favorable counts and made some defensive mistakes.”

After scoring an early run, Little Falls scored three runs off NC State starter Jason Zinser over his five innings of work.
All three runs were earned, on three hits, he walked three batters and struck out five. What may pain the lanky right-hander as the two-run home run given up to Jaquin Valdez (Palm Beach Atlantic) in the fourth and the two hit batters along with a throwing error to first that led to his third run.

The deficit should not have been insurmountable, but Saratoga gave up an additional three runs to the Miners (8-9) three runs in the seventh for a commanding 6-1 lead.

Another error, this time by Phillies shortstop Ty Hohman (Virginia Tech) set the table for Little Falls designated hitter to drive in two runs with his drive to right field in the top of the seventh inning.

Despite being down by five runs, the Saratoga squad was vocal and upbeat late in the contest, cutting into the lead and putting the Minders on the ropes during its final at-bats.

“We’ve played Little Falls and had success,” Tyler Biddix (Virginia) said. “We didn’t want to let them come in our house and walk out with an easy 6-1 win.”

The NYCBL leading hitter, J.D. Martinez (Nova Southeastern) beat out an infield single and was followed by Hohman to start out the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs, Biddix drove an Eric Fama offering down the left field line, cutting into the lead, 6-3. Biddix came around to score on newcomer Domonique Rodgers (NC State) RBI single through the left side, bringing the Phillies within two.

“This guy (Fama) came with a lot of fastballs,” Biddix said. “When he was behind 1-0 I knew he would throw a fastball. The last time I missed them, but I knew it was coming.”

After the second 1-2-3 inning by Saratoga’s relief tandem of Josh Simmons (Wheaton MA) and Billy Vernon (Stanford), the Phillies appeared poised to strike again.

Nate Holland (Louisville) returned from his hip injury and led off the ninth with a walk and advanced on a groundout. Hohman followed up with a single through the left side, putting runners at the corners, but a strikeout and a groundout to the first baseman would quell the Saratoga rally.

The Phillies will look to start a new winning streak Monday afternoon, traveling to Watertown for a previously postponed contest against the Wizards. Saratoga will host four games this week at East Side Rec including Northern rival Glens Falls Tuesday and Thursday before taking on Bennington and Watertown over the weekend. All games are free to the general public with a 7 p.m. scheduled first pitch.

Gamer - Phils sweep Bombers Friday night on 3-game streak

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- It was a historic night at East Side Rec for the Saratoga Phillies and it couldn’t have come at a better time as the Spa City collegians swept the Bennington Bombers, 3-1 and 4-3 earning the 100th and 101st victory for the local New York Collegiate Baseball League franchise.

The sweep also earned the Phillies (8-10) their first three-game winning streak of the year as the squad utilized its own perfect storm of quality pitching, key defensive plays and timely hitting up and down its line-up to turn the corner midway through the summer season.

“Some of the pieces have come together lately,” Saratoga skipper Kevin Graber said. “JZ (Jason Zinser) is in town, Nate Holland is back and the arrival of Domonique Rodgers. We’re turning the corner and have an influx of good energy.”

Duke University second baseman Dennis O’Grady hit his first home run of the NYCBL season to put Saratoga ahead in the fourth inning of the opener.

“I couldn’t let Dale Alberto be the only infielder with a home run,” O’Grady said with a laugh between contests. “In the inning before he threw a first pitch fastball. I thought he would do it again, so I sat on it.”

Former Columbia High School standout Kyle Meyer (Marist) knocked in the game-winning RBI with a single to left field, scoring another local star, Saratoga Central Catholic’s Vince Farfaglia (Francis Marion) in the fifth. The former Saint then provided his own RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to give the Phillies staff an insurance run.

“I’m just seeing the ball very well,” Farfaglia said. “My pitch selection has been very good lately and I picking good pitches to hit, not letting the pitcher get ahead of me.”

The Saratoga offense buoyed the performance of lefty starter Eric Potter (Maryland) who went four and one-third innings, allowed only a run. He gave up three hits, walked four batters on the bookend of his start while striking out seven in the middle, including five in a row.

“I just got in a groove,” Potter said. “I’ve been working on my mechanics and concentrate on staying on top of the ball.”

His receiver and current Terrapin teammate Mike Moss was again pleased with his hurler’s performance.

“They key for him is to get ahead of the batter,” Moss said. “When he’s ahead I’m able to work around with his change-up and breaking balls. It’s difficult for them to hit and they can’t key in on a certain pitch.”

In the nightcap, Oklahoma State right-hander Taylor McKinney “Cowboy’d Up” and went five and one-third innings, giving up three runs, only one earned while striking out two batters. He was also the recipient of two and almost three double plays behind him.

“The guys behind me were awesome,” McKinney said. “They were diving, laying out, getting ground balls. It was great.”

Saratoga held a 2-1 lead through four innings on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Biddix (Virginia) that scored Ty Hohman (Virginia Tech) who led off the second with a single and stole second. Hohman led off the fourth with a double to right field and raced to third on an errant throw to the cut-off man. He would score on a fielding error for the 2-1 lead.

The NYCBL batting leader, J.D. Martinez (Nova Southeastern) roped a triple to deep centerfield, driving in O’Grady and Holland in the fifth inning, giving the Phillies a 4-1 lead that would become key later on.

McKinney tired in the sixth, giving up two consecutive base hits and his defense committed two errors late, ending his evening. Former Lansingburgh High School standout Dave Batchelder (Saint Francis) stemmed the tide with a groundout and a fly out to centerfield to end the threat.

Zinser came on in the seventh and struck out the side to officially put the Phillies on a three-game winning streak and pull them closer to .500 on the season.

“It’s a great feeling,” Zinser said. “This team deserved that kind of outing from me. I’d like to be starting, but on other days, I want to be able to contribute to the team and it’ll pay dividends down the stretch run.”

The Phillies travel to Glens Falls Saturday night to take on rival and 2007 East Division Champion, Golden Eagles at 7 p.m. before returning home Sunday afternoon to face Little Falls at 7 p.m.

Phils rained out Thursday afternoon, twinbill on tap Friday

It was speculation all day of whether East Side Rec could handle the on again, off again rain that fell in Saratoga County and I got the answer just after 3 p.m. when Phillies co-general manager Keith Rogers called to let me know that today's game was rained out.

The Phillies were scheduled to take on the Bennington Bombers Thursday and Friday night at East Side Rec, but now will attempt to get both games in on Friday beginning at 5 p.m. in a twi-night event.

Saratoga (6-10) will have Oklahoma State's Taylor McKinney throwing in the 5 p.m. contest with Maryland left-hander Eric Potter set to start the nightcap.

The Phillies need to sweep Friday's twin set against the Bombers (8-7) to help erase some of their early season woes and see if they can start a positive streak after Wednesday's win over Little Falls at home.

Saratoga is in its best shape of the year with the entire staff healthy and at least cleared to play and spirits appeared high after the win over the Miners.

A sweep could go a long way to erase the early season doldrums of the college ballplayers.

G16 - Philies end skid, drop Little Falls, 6-3

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- It’s taken three weeks into the New York Collegiate Baseball League season, but the Saratoga Phillies may have just turned the corner on a young season with a tightly played 6-3 over Little Falls Wednesday night at East Side Rec.
Saratoga put together a eight-hit, six run attack Wednesday night and kept their defensive errors to a minimum, ending another three-game skid this season.

The win was important, coming immediately after Tuesday night’s 14-9 loss at Amsterdam where the Phillies finally began scoring multiple runs versus their small ball habits of the early season.

“I told them last night, we’re this close,” Saratoga head coach Kevin Graber said, holding his thumb and forefinger almost together. “We scored nine runs on 14 hits. The at-bats were so much better and our pitching staff giving up 14 runs was an anomaly.”

The Phillies (6-10) didn’t put the bats on ice for the first game of their three-game home stand, scoring four runs in the seventh inning to put the contest away.

Jordan Wormsley (Vanderbilt), Dale Alberto (Nova Southeastern) and Dennis O’Grady (Duke) were issued consecutive walks by Little Falls starter Jimmy Hoyt (Centenary) and reliever Jake Arendsen (Oakland).

Wormsley scored on a groundout by Tyler Biddix (Virginia) to tie the contest at three apiece. David Coleman (Virginia) pounded out the game-winner a single through the middle, plating Alberto and O’Grady for the 5-3 lead. He would come around when Ty Hohman (Virginia Tech) stroked a single past a diving third baseman for the 6-3 lead.

“I was trying to work early in the count with runners in scoring position,” Coleman said. “I was trying to put the ball in play on the right side and put some wood on the ball, just to get the job done.”

While Coleman provided the go-ahead drive, J.D. Martinez (Nova Southeastern) continued to cement his name in the Saratoga record books, at the expense of the Miners.

Martinez sent a Hoyt offering over the left field fence for his seventh home run of the year, placing him second in the most recent NYCBL record book. It was also his fifth home run of the season against Little Falls.

“There is always that one team you do well against,” Martinez said. “Chipper Jones destroys the Marlins, there is always that one team.”

Martinez is batting .600 against the Miners on nine hits, five of them home runs, seven runs batted in and 26 total bases.
“Little Falls is the only team that pitches to me, not around me,” Martinez said. “Everyone else throws junk. I get impatient with the other pitchers and get out of my own mentality.”

Besides the timely hitting, the Phillies appear to be buoyed by the healthy return of catcher Larry Pempek (Northern Kentucky), Chris Buss (Old Dominion) and Nate Holland (Louisville).

“We have the opportunity to do something here,” Graber said about the three-game set at home.

Nova Southeastern righty Miles Mikolas started for Saratoga, going six innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out two. Lefty Sean Lucas (Vanderbilt) earned the victory for his two innings of work, allowing one hit, walking a batter and striking out four. Josh Simmons (Wheaton MA) pitched the ninth, closing out the sixth win of the year for the Phillies.

Little Falls catcher Dave Wendt (Dawling) led off the fifth with a single to center and advanced to third on a double to right field by John Spatola that eluded Vince Farfaglia (Francis Marion). Wendt tied the contest at two apiece on a groundout to the first baseman. Spatola would score on a Nick Campbell’s pop fly out in foul territory. Farfaglia made a sliding catch to add an out to the inning, but his relay throw was not in time to catch Spatola giving the Miners a 3-2 lead.

The Phillies went ahead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth when Saratoga Central Catholic graduate Vince Farfaglia (Francis Marion) hit a one-hop double to the left field wall, driving in Ty Hohman (Virgina Tech). He reached on a one out single to center earlier in the inning.

Saratoga tied the score in the bottom half of the second when J.D. Martinez (Nova Southeastern) hit his seventh home run of the season, sending the Jimmy Hoyt offering over the 347-foot mark on the left field fence.

Little Falls got on the board first, courtesy of a fielding miscue that has plagued the Phillies of late. Saratoga catcher, Larry Pempek (Northern Kentucky) dropped a pop fly behind the plate in foul territory, giving Little Falls batter, Joaquin Valdes new life. He took advantage, roping a double down the left field line, scoring Mike Augustine (Boston College) who led off with a single to centerfield.

G15 - No relief for Phillies pitching staff in wild 14-9 loss

AMSTERDAM — The Saratoga Phillies were unable to deliver a win on manager Kevin Graber’s birthday Monday night due to unplayable fields in Watertown. The local collegiate squad had a chance to make up for it on the road Tuesday at Amsterdam, but after almost delivering what the skipper wanted most, bunches of runs, the candles were blown out without another Phillies victory.

Saratoga (5-10) fell behind Amsterdam early on, 8-3, rallied to take the lead, 9-8, before the Phillies relievers once again fell victim to the Mohawks bats, losing 14-9, for their third loss in a row.

“I feel like when we are 0-0 or ahead, we only been able to score when we’ve been going for one run,” Graber said. “When we’re down by two or more, we don’t get runs in bunches. To win, we’ve got to get rallies of four or five runs.”
The runs came in bunches Tuesday night, once for the Phillies, but also for the hometown Mohawks on two separate occasions.

After a five-run outburst by Amsterdam in its half of the fifth inning, the Mohawks shook off a five-run comeback from Saratoga in the sixth and seventh innings and pounded the Phillies relievers for five more runs in the seventh, putting the three and a-half hour contest away for good.

Amsterdam’s Bryce Nugent (Marist) struck out, but reached on a dropped third strike, moving over on a Ricky Pacione (Marist) walk followed by a walk issued by new Saratoga reliever, Matt Tomshaw (Virginia), to Chris Bisson to load the bases.
Mark Onorati (Manhattan) ripped a two-run single up the middle, plating Nugent and Pacione. For the go-ahead, 10-9 lead in the bottom of the seventh.

The bases were loaded again when Mike Spina (Cincinnati) walked before Ben Clowe made his presence felt again with a grand slam over the extended left field wall for a 14-9 lead.

It ended a night that could have been more pleasant for the Saratoga manager.
Graber was the recipient of a birthday surprise in the sixth inning as his Phillies rallied from a five-run deficit.

Dale Alberto (Nova Southeastern) took a one-out walk and turned it into a run after a bloop single by Tyler Biddix (Virginia), an infield single by David Coleman (Virginia) and an RBI single by J.D. Martinez (Nova Southeastern). Biddix and Coleman were plated on a Larry Pempek (Northern Kentucky) RBI single and Martinez scored on a passed ball, cutting the lead, 8-7.

Despite the rally, the Phillies left the bases loaded to end the inning.
The presents continued to flow for the Phillies skipper, including two more in the seventh as the Phillies took a 9-8 lead into the late innings.

Alberto again led off a hit, this time a double to left centerfield, advancing on a single and scoring on a J.D. Martinez groundout to third, tying the contest at eight apiece. Coleman reached on a single to right and scored the go-ahead run on Ty Hohman’s RBI double down the left field line, putting Saratoga ahead, 9-8.

After Saratoga starter, University of Cumberlands right-hander Mike Fiers was lifted in the bottom of the fifth inning, newly arrived pitcher Billy Vernon (Stanford) was tagged for four runs on four hits off all four batters he faced in the fifth inning.
He gave up a three-run shot to Mike Spina (Cincinnati) over the right field fence and followed that up with a back-to-back offering to college teammate Ben Clowe (Stanford) for a quick 7-3 Amsterdam lead.

Vernon was lifted for left-hander Dennis O’Grady (Duke) who would give up a manufactured run by Amsterdam. Brendan Rowland (UAlbany) reached on a misplayed double to left field by Saratoga’s J.D. Martinez. He leapt, but missed the ball and his subsequent relay throw rolled through the infield, missing the entire relay staff, allowing the runner to reach third. Martinez made up for it, grabbing a foul pop by Bryce Nugent (Marist) at the left field fence for the second out of the inning, but was too deep to prevent Rowland from scoring on the fly out, giving the Mohawks a commanding 8-3 lead.

Saratoga managed to again score a single run after Vince Farfaglia (Francis Marion) led off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He would knot the game at three apiece on an RBI single by Kyle Meyer (Marist) in the top of the fourth.

Amsterdam put together its second rally of the contest, two runs in the bottom of the third, again courtesy of an overzealous defensive play by starter, Mike Fiers (University of Cumberlands).

Chris Bisson (Kentucky) walked and advanced to third after a steal and a groundout. Meanwhile, Fiers plunks Mike Spina (Cincinnati) on the left arm, putting two runners on.

The drama came when Ben Clowe (Stanford) gets off a check swing dribbler down the first base line. Fiers and catcher Mike Moss (Maryland) converge and after the ball bounces into fair territory, Fiers picks it up and sends an errant throw wide of first base. The ball bounces through foul territory and out of play, allowing Bisson and Spina to score, putting the Mohawks ahead, 3-2.

Saratoga took a 2-1 lead in the second after Tyler Biddix (Virginia) reached on an error and was moved over on a sacrifice bunt by David Coleman (Virginia) and to third on a wild pitch. He would score on a sacrifice fly by Ty Hohman (Virginia Tech).

Fiers wouldn’t figure into the decision and Vernon was only saddled with an exploding ERA and not the loss, that fell on O’Grady. The book on the Saratoga relievers would never be considered a best seller, as Vernon, O’Grady and Tomshaw combined for 10 runs, all earned on 10 hits. They gave up four walks and struck out three in the final four innings.

Fox gets it right...a rarity in promoting Morlock

One of the good guys gets the right call

It came over in an e-mail and then across another media blog, but for once all the news was good regarding the local sports media.

In an era of cutbacks, layoffs, buyouts and retention re-negotiations at almost ever media outlet, print and television combined, someone finally made the right decision.

FOX23 News producer and anchor Scott Morlock was finally promoted to the weekend anchor spot, vacated by another good guy, Brent Martineau...at the end of February.

Fox23 was in its own turmoil with changes above in general managers and a change of ownership, among other things. So rather than make a move and promote the guy in front of them, the brain trust decided to review tens of 100s of tapes to see if there was someone else that may be a better choice...

    Hmmmmm....nope.

Yep, go with the guy who has been in town for the past 11 years and worked his way up from the sports video ranks into that of sports producer, reporter and been the interim weekend sports anchor and co-host of Fox 23s popular Fast Track racing program.

FOX23 hands down is the viewing choice for local sports fans with their Fast Track and High School Sports Show during the scholastic season, everyone else has either been behind or attempted to copy their on-going product and Scott has been a key to each of these successful events.

The problem now is..."Who am I going to talk to Friday night's at Albany-Saratoga Speedway?" Damn promotion...

    Congrats Scott.

Long ball powers Phils past Little Falls, 3-1 on the road

Martinez breaks Phillies single-season home run record

Saratoga Phillies manager Kevin Graber is always looking for his club to manufacture runs with “small ball”, but on the road Thursday night it was all about the long ball as the Spa City collegiate baseball squad won its second contest on the road, 3-1 over Little Falls in NYCBL action.

Saratoga (5-7) had its biggest surprise come from the most unlikely source in the third inning when 5-foot-11 infielder Dale Alberto (Nova Southeastern) belted his first pitch of the third inning over the left field wall for a solo home run, sending the Phillies dugout into a frenzy.

“He’s been working with me doing some early, early batting practice the last couple days and worked on him taking his stride towards the pitcher,” Graber said. “The guys have been giving him a good natured ribbing about his batting average so when he hit it, it was a mix of shock and a chance to give him a hard time as well as show him some appreciation as to how hard he has worked the last couple days.”

In the fourth, it wasn’t a surprise, but it is a record as J.D. Martinez (Nova Southeastern) hit his Saratoga record sixth home run of the wood bat summer season over the centerfield wall giving the Phillies a 2-0 lead.

Former Saratoga Phillie, Bryan Cook (Nova Southeastern) held the previous home run mark with five round-trippers last season, courtesy of a long ball tear late in the 2007 season.

The current single-season mark for home runs in the NYCBL as a wood bat league appears to stand at seven home runs, held by three different players over the past eight years.

Saratoga starter, lefty Eric Potter (Maryland) was sharp, pitching six shutout innings of three-hit baseball. He earned his first win of the season, striking out three batters and walking only one.

“He was 0-2 on a lot of hitters,” Graber said. “His velocity was good and in the fifth inning, he only had 50 pitches. Our pre-game plan to split with him and Taylor (McKinney), but we put him out there again and he was able to get us through the sixth.”

Little Falls (5-5) got on the board in the eighth inning off McKinney, giving up an unearned run in his second inning of work.

Saratoga tacked on another run in the top of the ninth inning taking advantage of a pinch-hit, lead-off walk issued to Tyler Biddix (Virginia) who was sac bunted to second by Mike Moss. With Tom Luciano (Duke) inserted as a pinch runner, Vince Farfaglia (Francis Marion) got on with a one-out single, moving the runner over and Alberto drove in his second run of the contest with a long fly ball to center field for the 3-1 lead.

Sean Lucas (Virginia) pitched to one batter to close out the eighth, before Josh Simmons (Wheaton, MA) came on for the save. He gave up a lead-off walk before striking out the next three Miner batters.

Thursday’s victory was the first back-to-back positive outcome for the Phillies this season.

“We feel like we’ve played a little bit of baseball, but only had home two games,” Graber said. “We’ve fallen into a nice little routine with the guys doing extra things and doing extra work. They’re here to work, to get better and right know it’s paying off.”

The Phillies open a two-game homestand tonight at 7 p.m. hosting the same Little Falls squad before taking on North Country rival, Glens Falls on Saturday.
