NYSAHA - Midget - New Hartford a 'must-go' to nationals

After falling to the Westchester Vipers in the New York State Amateur Hockey League state championship game, the New Hartford U16 midget squad wasn't up for celebrating, traveling home or much less facing their oponnent any time soon.

The red, white and blue squad from Central New York doesn't have a choice.

The USA National Tier II 16U Tournament doesn't have an eligible team in the Buffalo area, so New York was awarded two berths into the tournament. The New Hartford squad just wasn't up to traveling during the first week of April to face Westchester in the opening round in Buffalo.

The New Hartford squad, comprised mainly of the New Hartford High ice hockey team, will have its players competing in the first full week of league competition in baseball, track and lacrosse.

Too bad, according to USA Hockey.

New Hartford has been ordered to compete at the USA Nationals whether they want to or not. A non-appearance by the squad would result in sanctions from USA Hockey on the entire New Hartford organization, suspending tournament participation for a full year at every level.

Several New Hartford staffers wondered if they would have to go or if they could pass up the opportunity and allow another team to go. The third-place squad in the state tournament was the Clifton Park Dynamos.

It didn't matter. New Hartford will attend, possibly suiting up as few as 10 players for a national event due to availablity, but the schedule won't be changed and a team won't be substituted for them.

Now is that sportsmanship on USA Hockey's part or what?
