“Crash course” in crew offered over Spring Break

ALPLAUS — The Friends of Shenendehowa Crew, Inc. is offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for interested students over their upcoming spring break.

Instead of hanging around the house, watching television, the Shen Crew team is inviting students to their own version of a “cram session”, learning how to row competitively in just five days during the vacation.

Traditionally the learn-to-row program is done over the summer to introduce rowers to the sport and ready them for the fall season, long multi-mile races against a clock. The Shen rowers want you to get on the water now, in time for the spring sprint season, the racing that pits you head to head with other schools on the water, pushing yourself and your racing shell to the limit.

The program is targeted for Shenendehowa High School students in grades 9 to 12 and will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to noon, April 14 to 18.

Students will be introduced to the sport of rowing and instruction will begin with learning basic technique on a rowing machine (ergometer) and then progress to outdoors onto the water in a crew shell. Proper care and use of equipment, safety, and preparation for competition will be covered.

After completing this first-ever “crash course spring learn to row”, participants are eligible to join the Shen crew team for the Spring racing season. The fee of $90 will be applied to the team’s Spring registration.

To register , students should stop by the office in High School East or West and pick up the brochure or go to for more information.
