Swimmers winners before Saturday's finals

It's something unique to the world of New York State Public High School Athletic Association's rules regarding playoffs and state advancement, qualifying for the New York State meet before the playoffs.

The state sets standards (times) to qualify for the state meet and swimmers can qualify during the regular season as well as at their own sectional meet.

Friday was a big day for the boys as several locals qualified for the state meet at two different locations prior to today's Section II finals at Amsterdam (small schools) and Niskayuna (large schools).

Here's a look at who officially earned a berth Friday at the Section II preliminaries from Saratoga County and the rest of Section II.

Small schools
  • 100-yard butterfly: Jamie Matthews (BHBL), 55.16 seconds.
  • 100-yard freestyle: Bryan Shaver (BHBL), 48.57.
    Other qualifiers
  • 500-yard freestyle: Kevin Burns (RCS), 4:56.42.
  • 100-yard backstroke: Kevin Burns (RCS), 55.00; Jacob VanEtten (RCS), 56.91.

    Large schools
  • 200-yard freestyle: Troy Nichols (SHEN), 1:48.99; Sean Parnett (SHEN), 1:49.13.
  • 200-yard individual medley: Ryan Brauer (SHEN), 1:58.96; Michael Bidwell (SHEN), 2:04.56.
  • 50-yard freestyle: Jacob Johnson (SHEN), 21:70; Mike Christine (SHEN), 21:88.
  • 100-yard butterfly: Mike Christine (SHEN), 52.76.
  • 100-yard freestyle: Jacob Johnson (SHEN), 47.91.
