Mother Nature puts sports on the skids

Mother Nature must not be a fan of high school basketball as more than 20 varsity contests were postponed Friday night due to the ice storm that engulfed the Capital Region.

Numerous schools in Saratoga County were closed for the entire day while others closed later in the day.

The Saratoga Springs varsity basketball contests against Shenendehowa were moved forward the furthest of any postponed contest to the first open date on the Suburban Council schedule, Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Another sport dramatically effected by the storm along with availability is the Saratoga Springs ice hockey contest at Shenendehowa, originally scheduled for Friday evening. Plainsmen senior forward Adam Hitchko is two goals away from tying the school record for career goals, but will now have a chance to do it in front of a much smaller crowd. The contest was moved to Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 3:30 p.m. due to ice availability at the Clifton Park Arena.

“It was a last minute change,” Shenendehowa coach Juan de la Rocha said. “It was the best time we could go with or we had to skate at 3 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday. I don’t think anyone would like that.”

The Plainsmen are utilizing their daily scheduled practice ice time to absorb the Saratoga contest.

“We have a week to fit it in,” de la Rocha said. “Tuesday and Friday are games for both of us and they have a game on both Saturdays. The season has to be over by next Sunday before the seeding meeting.”

The Shenendehowa coach said his leading scorer, Hitchko, wouldn’t be effected by the game change as he approaches the career goal milestone mark set from 1990 to 1994 by Mike Rosa with 87.

“The record isn’t important to him,” de la Rocha said. “Winning the game is. If he goes the next three games and his only contribution on the score sheet is something like four assists and three wins, he’ll still look back on it as a great senior season.”
