Former players staying in the game

Some of the top players in the area continue to be dedicated to their craft.

Here is a photo of former Shenendehowa power forward Krystal Hammond (left) with the Niskayuna girls varsity basketball squad as an assistant coach to head coach Sarah Neely during a Jan. 4 contest at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.

It was Niskayuna that handed Suburban Council blue division leader and the No. 7 ranked Class AA squad in the most recent New York State Sportswriters poll its only loss to open the season.

"If you look at Niskayuna's defense, they're tenacious," Shenendehowa coach Ken Strube said. "I bet a lot of that came from Krystal."
It certainly was the key in the Jan. 4 contest, a 43-38, win on the road by the Silver Warriors.

After graduating from Shenendehowa in 2003, Hammond played four years at Union College in Schenectady, where she finished with 878 points in her career and seventh all-time in rebounds with 641.
