A run in the park

The weather was ideal, the turnout was strong and the cross country course was in excellent shape Sunday morning for the 7th annual Saratoga National Bank Cross Country Classic, just another typical fall classic in Saratoga Spa State Park for its 178 runners.

The rare cross country race, breaks away from the traditional road races available throughout the fall running season, moving the harriers off pavement and onto trails. The event continues to attract runners to the Spa City year after year.

On Sunday, the best times in the morning’s jaunt belonged to Cortland’s Scott Weeks and Seneca Falls runner Amanda Laytham.

Weeks completed the 5k state championship course in 15 minutes, 46 seconds to take the top spot overall and avenge two consecutive second place finishes.

“For the past two years I was second and Matt (LoPiccolo) won it before,” Weeks said. “I happen to be in a little better shape than he is, he’s just at a different time in his training, just like I was before.”

The 35-year-old harrier was able to hold off LoPiccolo, despite not feeling his best late in the race.

“I felt good for the first two miles, then I got sick to my stomach after the two mile mark,” Weeks said. “I had 25 seconds on him at the two mile mark and at the finish I was only 16 seconds in front of him.
“He caught me that last mile,” Weeks said. “He had a battle for second and third.”

LoPiccolo beat out Peru’s Andrew McDougal by a second at the finish line for second. David Kavan of Mechanicville was the top Saratoga County finisher, running a 17:14 for seventh place.

Laytham successfully defended her women’s title, running the course in 17:18.

“I was 15 seconds quicker than last year, but my legs don’t feel as good as they did last year,” Laytham said. “This is such a fun race. I came for fun, I wasn’t especially nervous, no pressure, really.”

The Central New York runner enjoyed returning to Saratoga Spa State Park annually, currently as part of the Syracuse Chargers Running Club.

“I used to run here in college (Ithaca) and our state championships were here my senior year,” Laytham said. “This is a true cross country race, you get every type of terrain, it’s the essence of cross country.”

Rachelle Jenkins was the first Saratoga County female runner across the line, finishing in 19:09 for 26-place overall and the third fastest woman on the day.
The Cross Country Classic opens the day of running for competitors of all ages, taking the role of an opening act for the USA Track and Field Masters 5k National Cross Country Championships.

“We had a great crowd here today,” Saratoga National Bank president Ray O’Connor said. “It brings a lot of runners here to Saratoga Springs.”

More than 175 runners took to the morning contest, one of the lowest turnouts in the seven year history of the event which has had a reported high of 330 runners in 2004 and a low of 200 in 2001.

“Last week was the Hudson-Mohawk marathon and half-marathon,” O’Connor said. “Coming back after that to run a 5k is tough."

The local race for charity is also impacted by the national championship event immediately following it.

“A lot of the runners that would normally be here are running later,” O’Connor said. “Next year the masters event isn’t here, so we expect to pick up between 50 and 100 more runners.”
