Field hockey seedings fixed...again

Committee correctly re-seeds Burnt Hills, SGF
The Section II Class A and B seedings may have been delayed a day due to a classification clarification by the committee, but the revised playoff picture is expected to be fair to everyone.
There was some confusion regarding the classification of three schools, Burnt Hills, South Glens Falls and Gloversville.

Over the weekend the three coaches were informed that they would be playing up in Class A after years of competing in Class B. The standard cut off for Class B schools is 800 pupils according the NYSPHSAA BED numbers for sports with three or four competition classes.

The Saratogian informed the committee that field hockey has adjusted numbers, called “classification variations” listed on the NYSPHSAA web-site and the three schools should still be seeded in the Class B division, well below the Class A requirement of 915 or more students. Burnt Hills has 877, South Glens Falls 810 and Gloversville 804.

“It was a little of a disaster,” Burnt Hills coach Melissa Murray said. “About 10:45 last night they called and said there was an error with the numbers. They said they would be re-seeding everyone in Class B.”

The move back to Class B allowed the Spartans to reschedule a scrimmage with Saratoga Monday afternoon and lift the spirits of the Burnt Hills squad.

“They were kind of surprised,” Murray said. “When they found out they were in the Bs again they cheered. It was clear to them that Class A was going to be more difficult.”

Class A and B contests set for Monday were canceled and sectional play will begin today.
In the newly corrected Class B, No. 3 Burnt Hills hosting No. 6 Hudson Falls in a quarterfinal match-up and No. 9 Gloversville will travel to face No. 8 South Glens Falls in an opening round contest. The Gloversville/South High winner will take on No. 1 Glens Falls Wednesday.

In the adjusted Class A seeds, No. 2 Saratoga will host No. 7 Columbia and No. 3 Shen will host No. 6 Guilderland, both at 3 p.m. Niskayuna received the No. 1 seed and will host No. 8 Shaker. No. 4 Queensbury will host No. 5 Bethlehem in the other Class A quarterfinal.
