Ballston Spa added to Mid-Atlantic Regional

CLIFTON PARK -- Ballston Spa manager Al Kaplan had to re-arrange this week's schedule for his Cal Ripken Baseball 12-year-old squad. After coming up short in the 50/70 Eastern New York State Tournament last week to Spring Youth Baseball in the final, the Scotties have another chance at a World Series.
Ballston Spa was invited to today's Mid-Atlantic Regional, hosted by Clifton Park after the Maryland region winner declined to travel to upstate New York. The Cal Ripken World Series will be held Aug. 11 in Aberdeen, Md. The Maryland champ earned automatic entry into the World Series and was not required to compete in the Mid-Atlantic Regional. The Maryland runner-up also declined entry into the multi-state regional event. The offer was then extended to Ballston Spa.
"We're happy to be in it," Ballston Spa coach Al Kaplan said. "We didn't back into this. We're the second team in New York, we came in second in the tournament. We're not to be walked on."
With their all-star season closing last week, players and families had to return to the area for the new opportunity.
"Everyone changed same plans for this," Kaplan said. "They're excited to be here."
Almost everyone was able to change plans.
Kaplan said one player will miss today's competition, along with himself.
"I have a meeting for work I have to go to," Kaplan said. "Ron Manna is stepping in. We went over the game plan, they're won't be any change."
Ballston Spa opens against Aston Valley, Pa. At 1:30 p.m. today. On Friday the Scotties face Piedmont, Del. at 12:30 p.m. before getting a re-match with Spring at 5:30. On Saturday Ballston Spa faces Hamilton, NJ at noon to finish pool play.
The top two teams advance to the semifinals Sunday afternoon with the championship game scheduled for noon Monday.
