Phils on vs. Bennington

Thunder rolled through the Spa City along with some raindrops, but the Saratoga Phillies versus the Bennington Bombers is on.

The threat of a thunderstom seriously diminished the crowd, despite the drop in temperature and humidity.

Saratoga sends 6-foot-3 righthander Mike Fiers (U of Cumberlands) to the mound with a 2-0 record and a no-hitter last Friday at Amsterdam.
Bennington will rely on righthander Tommy Mejia (Dominican).

The Phillies will try to gain ground on Glens Falls who hold a 3-game lead atop the East Division. The Golden Eagles have won nine straight games and 3-of-4 against Saratoga.

Cory Kuzmik (NJIT) returned to the Phillies on Wednesday. He was diagnosed with a calcium deposit on his non-throwing shoulder and was thought to be out for the year. The deposit didn't bother the left-hander and was cleared to return.

Saratoga coach Garret Baron put Eric Walker (Oaklahoma State) behind the dish tonight to catch Fiers. Tyler Scruggs (West Virginia) had success with Fiers, including calling the no-hitter on Friday.
Speculation is that Baron wants a left-hander (Walker) in the line-up against Mejia.

Baron also changed the look in the coach's boxes. Assistant coach Andy Cuthbertson was in Baron's usual spot at third while Steve Checksfield was at first.
No speculation on my part, just an observation.
Baron returned to his usual spot in the bottom of the third. Go figure.

The NYCBL All-Star game is set for Friday, July 6 at Amsterdam. Each team is able to submit two position players and a pitcher.
As the East Division champs Baron is expected to be the manager and should be allowed to add a few names to his roster. We'll keep you posted.
