Clfiton Park's Petrecki present for NHL draft

Clifton Park ice hockey player Nick Petrecki is used to draft days, he was drafted twice in 2005 by teams in the USHL and the OHL. Today, the 17-year-old Petrecki is on hand at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

The 6-foot 3-inch defenseman who has played for ice hockey for Clifton Park, Troy, Albany and the CD Selects and most recently the Omaha Lancers in the USHL. He is expected to go in the first round overall.

“For the most part it’s pretty exciting,” Petrecki said from Columbus. “It’s a high stress situation from being at the NHL combine in Toronto with general managers and coaches watching you. Then you have physical and psychological testing, and then you’re here. It’s fun, but stressful.”

Petrecki is ranked as the 21st American skater by the NHL’s Central Scouting service, moving up from 31st at the mid-term ranking.

“My hopes are to go in the first round, it would be an honor,” Petrecki said. “Whatever pick it doesn’t matter to me. It’s a dream come true. I want to be picked by a team that wants me as a player and can help me at the next level.”

The 2007 NHL Entry Draft first round will be broadcast locally on Time Warner Cable Versus, channel 75 beginning a 7 p.m. Friday. The second through seventh rounds will be broadcast beginning 10 a.m. Saturday on
